OCD Q & A

What is obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)?

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a mental health condition that causes ongoing unwanted thoughts, called obsessions, and repetitive behaviors or mental routines, called compulsions.

These behaviors are often done to reduce anxiety or prevent something the person fears might happen. While many people have occasional worries or habits, OCD symptoms are more intense and can interfere with work, school, relationships, and everyday life.

What are the symptoms of OCD?

OCD symptoms vary from person to person, but they generally involve obsessions, compulsions, or both. Common symptoms include:

  • Unwanted images or thoughts that are difficult to control
  • Fear of germs, contamination, or illness
  • A strong need for things to be orderly or just right
  • Repeated checking of locks, appliances, or other items
  • Excessive handwashing, cleaning, or counting
  • Repeating words, prayers, or numbers silently
  • Anxiety or distress when routines are interrupted

Symptoms can range from mild to severe and may change over time.

What causes OCD?

There’s no single cause of OCD. Research suggests it may result from a combination of genetic, biological, and environmental factors.

People with a family history of OCD may have a higher risk of developing the condition. Differences in brain function and certain life experiences, such as ongoing stress or trauma, may also play a role.

A lack of willpower doesn’t cause OCD, and it’s not something a person can snap out of.
